EU: Corrupt nation-state protection racket

The European Union, governed by unelected bureaucrats in Brussels, is, once again, showing that it is beholden to no one but itself.

Certainly, the EU does not represent the wishes of the people of Europe; otherwise it would not be threatening the people of the aspirant nations of Scotland, Catalonia, and Flanders with expulsion from the EU if they take the path of self-determination.

The very same EU that has emaciated the national sovereignty of Greece and Italy, by forcing those nations to implement draconian austerity programs at the expense of the health, security, and welfare of the Greek and Italian people, now proclaims that the Scot, Catalan, and Flemish people are not sanctioned by Brussels, itself a city without a country, to govern themselves.

The EU, which received this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, has declared itself the final arbiter of what countries live, die, and are still-born in Europe. Accomplishing with bankers’ whims what Adolf Hitler was unable to accomplish with weapons of war, the EU’s political directorate, unelected by popular vote, has become a Europa super state.

The EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has proclaimed that if Scotland becomes independent after a 2014 referendum, it will have to re-apply for EU membership. Barroso is, therefore, proclaiming that the United Kingdom is not an equal union of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland but a nation dominated by England.

For Barroso, the Act of Union of 1707 is meaningless, merely a colonial absorption of Scotland by England. Barroso, by making it difficult for Scotland to both become independent and remain in the EU, is acting on behalf of the British Conservative, Liberal Democratic, and Labor Parties by throwing down a gauntlet to the governing Scottish National Party.

Barroso, from a country that is, like Greece, collapsing under the weight of European banker-dictated austerity dictates, marches to the tune of not the people of Scotland, currently a part of the EU, but shadowy global bankers who meet in secret in resort hotels around the world to bare their fangs and run their hands while contemplating their next victims.

Scotland’s deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has cried foul over Barroso’s insistence that Scotland would not only have to reapply for EU membership but also commit to adopt two regimes that the UK has opted out from, the euro and the Schengen free movement zone. Sturgeon said there are no EU provisions for removing European citizenship from the people of Scotland, which has been part of the EU for 40 years.

Scottish First Minister Alexander Salmond has stated that except for voting rights for Scotland, the country’s membership rights and opt-out clauses would remain in force. Barroso is doing everything he can to protect the political interests of the status quo enthusiasts of the three parties of capitalism and unionism in Britain - the Tories, “New Labor,” and the “Tory Lite” Lib Dems.

Barosso told the BBC, “If a country becomes independent it is a new state and has to negotiate with the EU.” The imperialist designs of the EU can be seen with great clarity in Barroso’s statement. If an aspirant country like Scotland or Catalonia wants to throw off the shackles of unequal union with an English government in London or a Castilian government in Madrid, they must reapply to join the EU with all sorts of cumbersome dictates being insisted upon by the Eurocrats of Brussels.

But when a nation like the German Democratic Republic ceases to be independent and joins the Federal Republic of Germany, already an EU member, the former GDR does not have to apply for membership. The EU construct is one that a Hitler or Benito Mussolini would find quite attractive as a convenience for empire building.

The EU is not merely a European empire in the making but a global one. The EU’s four remaining colonialist members - the UK, France, the Netherlands, and Denmark - permit the EU to act as a global empire with the inclusion of colonies from the Caribbean to the South Pacific and Indian Ocean. The EU has not only permitted, but encouraged, its colonialist members to drag their feet on decolonization.

The Netherlands, through a clever contrivance, did not decolonize the Netherlands Antilles when it dissolved. Instead, Curacao and Sint Maarten, like Aruba, became “self-governing” entities under the Dutch Crown while Bonaire, Saba, and Saint Eustatius became municipalities of the Netherlands; in other words they are EU territory.

Britain has re-imposed colonial regimes in the Turks and Caicos Islands and Anguilla while France continues to slow the process of independence for New Caledonia and Polynesia. With the United States having military bases in Greenland and eyeing oil reserves there, Denmark is not allowing its massive Arctic colony to gain any more self-government.

The EU has become a neo-Holy Roman Empire, where the divine right of kings and dictates of unelected Eurocrats like Barroso and his colorless colleague, EU Council President Herman de Rompuy, remains the supreme law of the realm. In this realm of plutocrats and Eurocrats, Scotland, Catalonia, and Flanders do not meet with approval of the political and financial barons and their courtiers.
